Green Heron Butorides striatus Goes Fishing | May 23, 2010 |
Yesterday I watched as a green heron flew out to a tree stump island on Toftrees pond. It appeared to have something in its bill.
A month or so previously, I saw a video clip of a green heron using bait to fish, and I wondered whether this green heron was behaving in a similar fashion.
And it was! I missed photographing the first successful strike, but the cooperative green heron moved to a new position and tried again.
The heron waved its bill with tidbit over the water, and the fish came to the heron (which I judged by the ripples in the pond).
And then the green heron struck.
I'm not sure what the heron caught, but it seemed content enough to swallow the whatever.
Imagine: fishing with a built-in rod.
Photo note: I used a Pentax K200D, with the SMC 1000mm reflex lens, for a long sequence of photos taken on 22 May 2010. |
