Update of 29 Jan. 2001. I received a bug ID from a friendly person by the name of Cat: "Spotted Cucumber Beetle (Diabrotica
undecimpunctata howardi Barber), of the subfamily Galerucinae of the
Family Chrysomelidae (Leaf Beetles) of the order Coleoptera (Beetles) of
the Class Insecta."
She went on to say: "It is indeed the bane of my husband the gardener: they come and chew on the cucumbers' and beans' leaves and they carry the 'wilt' (a fungus, I think), which kills the cuke plants early." |
Only a little over a week ago, in mid-November, I was taking photographs of the last daisies of the season when I came across an interesting little bug. Although slightly more elongated than a ladybug, it had typical features: black dots on a brilliant color. Only, the color was not red: it was bright, bright yellow!

However, even without my knowing precisely what type of bug it is, yellow does not work anywhere as well as red in terms of a friendliness quotient. (Yellow has the sad reputation of being an unpopular color, despite "The Yellow Rose of Texas" or George Bush, for that matter.)
And so the closeup below of the little guy doesn't show to advantage. Or perhaps its having a green head means the bug is some sort of pest.

Nevertheless, the pseudo ladybug is very striking, as are some of the daisies, photographed that day, and one of them is shown below.
