Tufted TitmouseJanuary 20, 2008

The tufted titmouse is a sprightly gray and white bird with enormous eyes and, at times, orange flanks. The tuft, or crest, is quite flexible, sometimes up and other times down. Whatever, it's a lively little bird with a lively song.

Along with chickadees, titmice are among the first birds to explore a new feeder or the first back when a feeder is filled.

Titmice are adept at all types of feeders, whether seed or suet.

Generally, a titmouse is in a rush, never pausing long on any perch, so I am grateful for those moments when a titmouse is singing.

The following is one of my favorite photos and perhaps a rare pose of a tufted titmouse: lost in contemplation. Probably wondering whether it should have a sunflower heart or a piece of suet.

Photo note: I used a Pentax *ist D, with a variety of lenses, for these photos which range from 2005 to 2008.
