Turkey Vulture | Nov. 26, 2007 |
|
Turkey vultures, being what they are, seem strangely appropriate hanging out on a dead tree.

| ||
The name vulture generally gives way to an image of birds clustered on the ground around some carcass.
However, in flight, turkey vultures are magnificent, and it is a splendid experience to have one pass overhead. |
|
Incredible flyers that they are, turkey vultures generally hold their wings in a V shape, which makes identification easy even from a long ways away.

Seen close, a turkey vulture has a striking color pattern, from black to gray to white. |
|
And when you get right down to it, the vultures do good service, helping keep forests clean.
Photo note: I used a Pentax *ist D, with the SMC 1000mm reflex lens. Some photos are from the game land by Cooper's Pond and others are from Tussey Mountain. For that matter, I can occasionally step outside in my backyard and see a turkey vulture overhead. Great birds! |
