Pileated Woodpecker
Four Portraits
Feb. 24, 2013

Given the limitations of screen size for showing photos of an otherwise very large woodpecker, I decided to have a series of four portraits of a pileated woodpecker eating suet. Head-and-shoulder portraits allow a larger view of this magnificent bird.

First up is my favorite of the four, which has been given a wonderful caption by Facebook friend (and superb photographer) Michael Gadomski:

"What a carpenter ant sees just before it gives up the ghost."

The second portrait shows the streamlined pileated going in for a peck.

Nothing like swallowing a tasty bit of suet.

But why was he sticking his tongue out?

All in all, I find pileated woodpeckers to be not only amazing but a great deal of fun, to watch and to photograph.

Photo note: I used a Pentax K20D, with the Sigma 150-500mm lens, for the photos, taken on Feb. 19 and 20, 2013.
