Common Loon At Play | April 6, 2008 |
|
The following week (that is, yesterday), Sue and I returned to Colyer Lake. We only saw four common loons (but seeing any loon is exciting).
The loons appeared more interested in playing and splashing than anything else. A wild charge is a good way to begin a frolic. |
|
To make the splashing run more interesting, a common loon either performs underwater somersaults or rolls over. The rolling over was easier to capture.
I call the following maneuver the Come Hither.
| |
| ||
This one is the Dance of Joy, by which the loon rolls over on its back and waves its feet in the air. |
|
Rising out of the water with spread wings is a common loon specialty. |
|
Common loons lead active, dynamic lives.
