The indigo bunting is a remarkably pretty and bright blue finch.

I don't quite understand the color variation, but the following is a darker indigo bunting.

The female bunting has some brown mixed with the blue, so the first two photos as well as the following are of males.
The third photo is a rear view, showing the dark wings.
The young, or immature, indigo bunting is a brown bird (and I needed the help of the State College Bird Club in order to identify it). Photo note: I used a Pentax *ist D, with the SMC 1000mm reflex lens. The photos date from today (the first one) to September 2006 (the young bunting). |
