Hermit ThrushFebruary 2007

The past week or so has been quite cold, so I was surprised to come across a hermit thrush, which is an American robin-sized bird (which shouldn't be too surprising, since a robin is also a thrush).

The hermit thrush tended to stay in the same bushes over a couple of weeks, for which he had a good berry supply.

Focusing my camera on the thrush was a challenge, since I had to shoot through many branches. Occasionally, though, the thrush hopped into the open.

Charactersitics of the hermit thrush (aside from a beautiful song in spring) include a reddish tail and tail wagging. Below I caught the thrush in midwag.

The hermit thrush reminds me of an oversized wren. Actually, whenever I see one, I first think that I've spotted a wren, but wrens are much smaller.

Photo note: I used a Pentax *istD, with the SMC 1000mm reflex lens, for these photos, taken in the end of January and beginning of February 2007.
