Great Egret in Flight | Sept. 27, 2009 |
|
Photographing the great egret is a particular challenge, since the white feathers reflect light. But I keep trying, and I was pleased by the following sequence of flight photos, somewhat backlit by the sun.

Seen here only during fall or spring migration, the great egret is a somewhat rare visitor to the Toftrees pond. This fall there were two great egrets, although one of them is hanging around longer than usual.

The wingspan of the great egret is amazing.

I suppose the wingspan in the above photo appears extreme due to foreshortening of the body and legs - but even with that in mind, it hardly seems believable.
Photo note: I used a Pentax K200D, with the SMC 1000mm reflex lens, on September 25, 2009, for these photos. |
