Ring-Necked Duck Aythya collaris | April 10, 2011 |
Ring-necked ducks (Aythya collaris) have a ring around their bill. Call it another example in the confusing art of naming birds.
Ring-necks are moderate in size (although Sibley's refers to them as being compact, which probably means a tad smaller than moderate). Following is a photo of a female and male. |
The photo of the female ring-necked duck above is a little overexposed; the next one shows her colors better. |
And here are two male ring-necked ducks in flight. |
Ring-necked ducks are seasonal visitors to Toftrees (and central Pennsylvania, for that matter). We see them in the spring and fall, in passing.
Photo note: I used a Pentax K20D, with the Sigma 150-500mm lens, during March 2011 for these photos. |
