CWC Release
Lana the Juvenile Bald Eagle
Oct. 14, 2015

Robyn Graboski, the director of Centre Wildlife Care (CWC), and her staff nurtured a particularly large and juvenile bald eagle back to health, and so the eagle (who I named Lana) was ready to be returned to the wild.

The first step was capturing Lana from her flight (i.e., exercise) cage, for which Robyn's advanced towel skills played a significant role.

Shortly after Robyn put Lana in an oversize crate, Sal (a Pennsylvania wildlife conservation officer) arrived to transport the eagle back to Bedford County, close to where Lana was first found a few months ago.

At the release site, as soon as Sal removed the covering blanket and opened the crate door, Lana stepped out.

A second afterward, Lana took to the air.

Lana taking off

Lana ascended via massive wingbeats (quite audible).

Lana gaining altitude

As soon as Lana gained sufficient altitude, she switched gears (so to say) and accelerated into the distance.

It is fine and wonderful to watch a beautiful bald eagle soar to freedom.

I've a larger album over at the CWC public page on Facebook (12 photos).

Photo note: I used a Pentax K20D, with the Sigma 10-20mm lens, for the first photo, and a Pentax K3, with the SMC-DA* 60-250mm lens, for the remaining photos, taken on 14 October 2015.

Note 2: Two earlier bald eagle releases: Canace (January 2013) and Xena (September 2013).
