Red Squirrels
Intense Nut Harvesters
December 10, 2006

A red squirrel is about half to two-thirds the size of a gray squirrel, but never tell that to a red squirrel. Reds are very territorial and will yell and scold anyone who comes too close.

Like most little animals, a red squirrel is easier to photograph if there's an obstruction between squirrel and photographer.

A key characteristic of tiny red squirrels is their preference for huge nuts: the bigger the better!

If worried, a red squirrel will freeze in position, and they blend in with their surroundings.

Of course, a sunny day and a terrific walnut are well worth a quiet sit and chew.

Red squirrels enliven any forest!

Photo note: I used a Pentax *ist D, with a variety of lenses for these photos, which were taken over the past year.
