Two Flower MacrosJune 24, 2006

The leaf cover, being what it is, I switched to taking macros of the various late spring and early summer flowers.

As usual, trying to identify any particular flower is a chore, but the following one was nothing less than serendipity. In the Audubon Field Guide to Wildflowers, I found a good match, but the description sold it to me:

The common name derives from the fact that the flowers are said to bloom on St. John's Eve, June 24.
It just so happens to be that today is June 24, when I took the photo. And those flowers weren't in bloom on June 23.

There will come a time when I began identifying flowers by color, rather than trying to figure out the actual name. Until that happens, here's a relatively easy one to identify: a tiger lily. However, the Audubon field guide refers to it as a day lily.

There is a huge selection of these day lilies (or tiger lilies) in the game land north of Cooper's Pond; it's a temptation to dig up a bunch for my garden.

Photo note: I used a Pentax *ist D, with the SMC-A* 200mm macro lens for these photos.

Other macros: flowers and dew
