Snow Geese Swarming | March 15, 2009 |
|
On March 1, 2009, at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, Pennsylvania, I had set up my camcorder on a tripod to be free to take photographs as well. I had guessed correctly, and camcorder pointed toward the main action of the second swarm of the day, and the photos I took were from the same direction. In a sense, my photos can be thought of enhanced stills of the video. (Or if you prefer photos over video, the video can be thought of as a summary of the photos.)
If you have already seen my large (15-meg) video of the swarm, the photo below will be familiar: Flocks are taking off, but the main action has yet to occur.

Notice the solid mass of snow geese on the field in the background.
A few seconds later, the field snow geese took off in a continuous wave and flew directly toward me.

The swarm passed to the left and to the right. I think the main group passed to the left, because of the clockwise pattern of the snow goose flight, with those in the background flying in the opposite direction.

It was incredible and noisy and wonderful! And that was only the second time I had ever seen snow geese.
Photo note: I used a Pentax *ist D, with the SMC-A* 300mm lens for these photos. |
