Juvenal's Duskywing
Erynnis juvenalis
June 5, 2016

Duskywings are small to medium-size dark butterflies. To the human eye, a duskywing appears black, but a photograph can bring out more tones.

Frankly, one duskywing looks like another to me, but the superb identifications offered by Butterflies and Moths of North America (BAMONA) are a joy and a bonus.

Today's duskywing is Juvenal's duskywing (Erynnis juvenalis).

As usual, I begin photographing any butterfly from farther than I'd prefer.

As I slowly worked my way closer to the Juvenal's duskywing, I was able to take clearer photos.

Again, to the eye, when out and about, they appear to be black, so if you come across a smallish dark butterfly, it's likely a dustywing.

Photo note: I used the Pentax K3, with the SMC-A* 200mm macro lens, on May 26, 2016.
