Mourning Cloak Nymphalis antiopa | June 5, 2014 |
A mourning cloak (Nymphalis antiopa) is a larger size butterfly, only slightly smaller than a monarch.
Mourning cloaks hibernate over winter and are among the first butterflies to appear in the spring, and what a beautiful sight they are. |
The overall deep, dark red of the wings often appears black to the naked eye, but only a slight touch on exposure brings out the full, rich color. |
Have I mentioned how much I enjoy seeing mourning cloaks?
Photo note: I used the Pentax K20D during spring 2010 and 2012 for these two photos. |
