Common Sootywing Pholisora catullus | August 15, 2010 |
During yesterday's morning walk I stopped to photograph a few sulphur (yellow) butterflies. A hummingbird perched nearby and then a second hummer arrived. Since there were two hummingbirds, a fight broke out between them. As soon as the fight settled, the black butterfly appeared, which I later identified as a Common Sootywing. It's one of the smaller butterflies, perhaps a quarter of the size of the typical Cabbage White butterfly.
My first photos of the sootywing were at a distance.

The white dots on top of its head are a key identifier.
Later, I managed to take a few closeups of the sootywing.

Sootywing . . . what an odd name! But it seems appropriate.
Photo note: I used a Pentax K20D, with the Sigma 150-500mm zoom for the first photo and with the Voigtlander 125mm macro for the second, taken on August 14, 2010. |
