An Eastern Tiger Swallowtail around the thistle flower | Sept. 4, 2007 |
|
In terms of butterfly photography, I've had my best luck around thistle flowers. The following eastern tiger swallowtail seemed happy to show all his angles.

| Backlighting helped enhance the effect. | ||

Switching to a good over-the-wing view.

Edgewise is interesting too.

| A view from the rear. This particular swallowtail is somewhat ragged and perhaps has had a rough time, since the extended swallowtail has been lost. Even so, this eastern swallowtail is remarkable good-looking. | ||

| Photo note: The photos were taken with the Pentax *1st D and the SMC 1000mm reflex lens. There's some unfortunate bokeh in the ending photos, but I figure it's okay for show-and-tell purposes (and I felt too lazy to improve it). |
