A Blue Jay
and a Cardinal

Both blue jays and cardinals are common birds but nevertheless beautiful. And apart from trying to photograph either at a bird feeder, it's a challenge to capture an image while I'm out walking. The advantage of early spring is that the trees have buds or baby leaves, or enough cover for a bird to feel secure but allowing enough light for an image.

The following blue jay was between the sun and me, which is why the blue isn't quite as intense as usual.

Although a female cardinal isn't as vividly red as the male, she is nonetheless very attractive.

Photo note: The photos were taken at the end of April 2003 at Saddle Rock, Long Island, with a Pentax LX and the SMC 400-600mm reflex lens.
