Common Loon
At Play
April 6, 2008

The following week (that is, yesterday), Sue and I returned to Colyer Lake. We only saw four common loons (but seeing any loon is exciting).

The loons appeared more interested in playing and splashing than anything else.

A wild charge is a good way to begin a frolic.

To make the splashing run more interesting, a common loon either performs underwater somersaults or rolls over. The rolling over was easier to capture.

I call the following maneuver the Come Hither.

This one is the Dance of Joy, by which the loon rolls over on its back and waves its feet in the air.

Rising out of the water with spread wings is a common loon specialty.

Common loons lead active, dynamic lives.

Photo note: I used a Pentax *ist D, with the SMC 1000mm reflex lens, on April 5, 2008, for these photos.
