Common Ringlet
Coenonympha tullia
July 29, 2012

Although described as being small in one field guide, I'd say that the common ringlet (Coenonympha tullia) might be considered a medium-size butterfly. The common ringlet is certainly pretty as well as distinct.

Admittedly, the second photo (about two weeks later) has a similar pose, but the photo has better detail.

Common ringlets are a northern butterfly that have expanded to the east and to the south, which is why I was lucky enough to come across them.

Photo note: The photos were taken with the Pentax K20D and the Sigma 150-500mm lens during July 2012, in the Toftrees game land, State College, Pennsylvania.
