Little Wood-Satyr
Megisto cymela
July 1, 2012

Despite the inclusion of "little" in its official name, the little wood-satyr (Megisto cymela) is a medium-size butterfly (from the subfamily satyrs or browns).

My first-ever sighting was in the beginning of June when I saw something brownish fluttering around. The butterfly kept its distance and preferred obscure positions in a dense bush; but I managed one decent photo.

The photo was sufficient to establish an ID, since having two eyes in both the fore and hind wings, as well as being brown: a little wood-satyr.

About two weeks later, I came across a second little wood-satyr, and I managed to get close enough to use a macro lens. This particular butterfly was more willing to pose, and so I had photos with its wings up . . .

It's always a treat to see a butterfly, especially a new one.

Photo note: The photos were taken with the Pentax K20D and the Sigma 150-500mm lens (1st photo) and the Voigtlander 125mm lens (2d and 3d photos) during June 2012.
