An Eastern Tiger Swallowtail
around the thistle flower
Sept. 4, 2007

In terms of butterfly photography, I've had my best luck around thistle flowers. The following eastern tiger swallowtail seemed happy to show all his angles.

  Backlighting helped enhance the effect.

Switching to a good over-the-wing view.

  Edgewise is interesting too.

A view from the rear. This particular swallowtail is somewhat ragged and perhaps has had a rough time, since the extended swallowtail has been lost. Even so, this eastern swallowtail is remarkable good-looking.

Photo note: The photos were taken with the Pentax *1st D and the SMC 1000mm reflex lens. There's some unfortunate bokeh in the ending photos, but I figure it's okay for show-and-tell purposes (and I felt too lazy to improve it).
